New Graduate Student Orientation
New graduate students received a warm welcome to the Penn State community from Dr. Nicholas Jones, Executive Vice President and Provost, and Dr. Regina Vasilatos-Younken, Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School, during the 2015 New Graduate Student Orientation, August 19, in Eisenhower Auditorium. Jones and Vasilatos-Younken greeted an audience of nearly 900 graduate students with words of encouragement and inspiring overviews of the vibrant learning community that defines Penn State, citing an array of “markers of excellence” that distinguish graduate education at the University.
Representatives of the Penn State Graduate and Professional Student Association, including Kevin Horne, the organization’s president, shared insights into the graduate experience and answered questions on a variety of topics.
The formal program featured presentations on services available to graduate students through the Office of Student Conduct, Center for Counseling and Psychological Services, and University Health Services. Presenters also provided detailed information on the use of eLion, developing effective mentoring relationships, and the impact of the Afforable Care Act on graduate students and their health insurance. The orientation schedule began in the morning with optional campus tours.
Following orientation, students were invited to attend the annual Graduate School Reception in Alumni Hall at the HUB-Robeson Center, where representatives of more than twenty campus organizations, administrative units, and service-oriented entities distributed literature, shared information, answered questions, and provided direction.
